The Scientific Programme
The Scientific programme was held in the Sporting d’Hiver and featured 7 short lectures on recent or changing approaches in Implantology, Periodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Prosthodontics and Pain Control. Past President David Glynn gave a short History of the European section of the International College of Dentists. Abstracts below.

Open Forum
Following on after the Scientific Programme, the Open Forum at the 49th Meeting of the European Section produced some challenging questions and interesting debate. In a new departure this year, and to avoid duplication of topics, Fellows were asked to pre-submit questions before the Annual Meeting. The Chairman this year was the Editor, Dr Cecil Linehan. A full Report of the questions asked and the ensuing debate is now posted in the Members' Area.

Pediatric Dentistry Update
Dr. Jean-Michel Morand

After 2 generations of impressive advances, early trends in the decline of dental caries seem to have halted if not reversed in our industrialized countries. The time for some questioning might have come: what has evidence based science determined and do we practice what we know?

Preservation of alveolar bone volume: changing approach to tooth extraction
Dr. Patrick A. Adriaens

A technique based on the principles of guided tissue regeneration is described. Following atraumatic extraction, a resorbable barrier membrane is adapted and stabilized between the alveolar bone and the mucosa surrounding the extraction site. Clinical and histological observations demonstrate maintenance of crestal bone volume and woven bone formation. This approach facilitates subsequent implant placement or prosthetic rehabilitation.

Condition of success in implant dentistry: breaking the dogma
Dr. Franck Renouard

A literature review and a 2- to 5-year retrospective study on 247 short implants shows that the success rate of short implants could be compared to longer ones. It seems that the only way to improve the implant load-bearing capacity is to increase its diameter, not its length. The goal of the lecture is to demonstrate that short implants could be used in routine practice with a high success rate.

History of Implantology
Dr. Jean Buquet

When setting an objective such as flying like a bird or replacing a missing tooth man will test the various solutions developed by his imagination regardless of the immediate consequences until he succeeds. The different approaches with their results and failures which have led to modern implantology were presented and compared with the many attempts and failures illustrating the history of aviation.

Passivity of fit : A Biological and Mechanical Paradox
Dr. Patrick Simonet

A passive fit was considered as essential, if not mandatory, for the long term success of osseointegration but recent studies have produced data indicating that prosthesis misfit may be less significant than once thought. We are faced with the following paradox : new computerized technology improves tremendously the mechanical and technical end result, but it may appear totally irrelevant from a biological point of view.

Evidence based therapy of inflammatory peri-implant diseases
Dr. Jean-Louis Giovannoli

Clinical experience demonstrates that marginal peri-implant inflammation due to infection can induce severe bone loss and lead to secondary implant failure although the incidence of inflammatory peri-implant diseases on implant failures is very low. This presentation assessed the level of evidence and
discussed the predictability of currently recommended therapy.

Recent advances in the Physiology and Pharmacology of pain
Dr. Jean-Daniel Aye

The large number of pain relieving drugs can cause perplexity about the reliability of these products. A new approach is required in view of the recent advances in physiology and pharmacology of pain. The physiology of local anesthetic, biological rhythms, chrono-pharmacology and the rationale for the use of non steroid anti-inflammatory drug were presented as well as for the prevention of post operative pain.

History of the European Section of the I.C.D

Dr. David Glynn
Presentation included the early history of the college: the European Section was formed following an informal meeting in Paris in 1954 where it was decided to hold the inaugural meeting in London in 1955 - included historic photographs.
