of the
European Section of the International College of Dentists
June 16th – 18th 2005
President Anders Ericson, former
Regent for Scandinavia, ran a most successful 50th Anniversary
Meeting of the European Section of the International College of
Dentists in a beautifully hot sunny Stockholm from June 16th –
19th 2005 – the first time the annual meeting has been held
in Sweden.
Over 180 Fellows, their spouses,
partners and guests attended this very special meeting and were
honoured by the presence also of the President of the College-at-Large,

The Scientific Programme
Being in Scandinavia where dental
research and clinical dentistry have long had a high standing,
and where Professor Per-Ingvar Branemark is perhaps the most well
known contributor to the dental profession with his pioneering
research into the field of osseointegration setting the standards
for modern implant dentistry, it is right and fitting that the
Scientific Programme was dedicated to a state-of-the-art seminar
with renowned Swedish speakers giving both surgical and prosthetic
aspects of treatment and results.
Fellows were indeed very well catered
for with excellent lectures from Dr Hans Nilson, Professor Stefan
Lundgren, Dr Ulf Lunden, Professor Christer Dahlin, and Dr Sven
Scholander.

Open Forum
At the end of the Scientific Meeting
the Open Forum was held once again and chaired by the Editor D
Cecil Linehan.
1. The Philip Dear Foundation: Dr David Glynn,
MICD, officially launched the Philip Dear Foundation, a charitable
fund for educational purposes which the European Section is establishing
to celebrate its 50th anniversary and to commemorate Philip Dear
who was the Founding Father of the European Section.
2. Dr Phillip Dowell Regent for England-Scotland-Wales,
asked what arrangements, if any, are being made to mark the Golden
Jubilee of the European Section in Genoa in 2006 ;
3. Dr. Sheldon Sydney Regent for Israel-Malta
asked that special efforts might be made to improve Communications
within the European Section by the setting up of specialist interest
groups by e-mail.
4. Dr Peter Brandstatter of Austria, asked if
the concept of a Scientific Advisory panel as suggested in the
Report of the Working Group on Planning and Development chaired
by Peter Kotschy in 2002 might help to ensure that the scientific
content of the Annual Meetings is more broadly based. For the
last 3-4 years we have had several lectures on implantology, with
a whole day on the subject in Sweden, and over 50% on Implantolgy
again in Genoa. Dr Brandstatter feels that such concentration
on specialist clinical topics, are, by definition of interest
to only a finite number of our Fellows.
5. Dr Walter van Driel, Vice Regent for the Benelux
countries, demonstrated the long-distance learning project he
has established through the University of Amsterdam. As an endodontist,
he has prepared the long-distance learning pages on his specialty.
The University of Amsterdam is offering the mainframes free to
the Fellows of the ICD. His question is: are there Fellows who
will prepare similar programmes in Periodontics, Orthodontics,
Preventative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery, Paedodontics
–etc etc
The Social Programme
In a new departure for the ICD European
Section, a golf tournament took place on Wednesday at the Vidbynäs
Golf Club. It was enjoyed so much, it is now going to be repeated
at the Annual Meeting in Genoa in 2006
and in Cardiff in 2007.
Volvo Cars sponsored the official
opening of the Meeting on Thursday evening with a get-together
party in the Volvo Show Rooms in downtown Stockholm.
While Fellows attended the Scientific
Programme, accompanying persons were taken on a cruise of the
Stockholm archipelago on a traditional ship built in 1912, the
m/s Gustafsberg VII.
Friday came to a great close after
with dinner and dancing to Fifties style music in the famous Nalen
Restaurant.
New Masters – new Fellows
The 50th Anniversary Meeting closed with a magnificent Induction
Ceremony and Gala Dinner on Saturday Evening in the Moderna Museet
