President of the European
Section of the ICD, Fellow Peter Pré
Dear Fellows
Distinguished Ladies
Dear Friends All,
It is my great pleasure to greet
you all. I would like to express my satisfaction and thanks for
letting me, as the International President of the International
College of Dentists, participate in the Annual Regents’
Meeting, and Convocation and Induction Ceremony of the European
Section. I consider it a privilege to be invited to attend this
most important, traditional activity your Section organizes every
year. My wife, Mirza, and I have travelled a very long distance
to reach this beautiful country. As you know, we are from Peru
in South America. Certainly, we are very happy to be here.
Our College is an institution built
by visionaries and selfless people with the highest professional
and personal qualifications. They are particularly known for having
cultivated the highest values of brotherhood, friendship, and
tolerance. Certainly these are the qualities that make the I.C.D.
so great, where justice and truth prevail in its members’
vision of the future, in a world filled with problems, inequity,
and abuse!
The Sections and their Districts
have a long-term goal of independency in their respective geographical
areas. We must recognize that our Sections indicate the correct
path for the College. The great potential of the I.C.D. emanates
from its Sections. They bring together the most prestigious and
best-known professionals in each District and Region. Precisely,
these are the professionals who have the greatest influence and
hold the most respected and accepted opinions. It is a source
of great pride to know that the Fellows of the I.C.D. are the
ones who lead, in their respective countries, the various academic,
scientific, and professional organizations.
Some Sections, Regions, and World
Executive Committee have achieved significant accomplishments.
However, there are some critical subjects that still require solution.
For these, we urgently need the active participation and assistance
of the more experienced members of our College. The College is
constantly reaffirming its basic philosophical concepts. Let me
mention a few:
• The actual construction of an international honorary professional
dental institution that conveys a very positive image, making
it a model of ethical development.
• Identification of each District’s most prestigious,
honorable, and respected dental professionals.
• Indoctrination of ICD-Fellows-to-be, prior to their induction,
in the fundamental principles of ethics and morals.
• Plans for scientific, social, and humanitarian action
in each of the I.C.D. Districts, Sections, and Regions.
• Solidarity of our stronger Sections, as well as technical
assistance, with the weaker Sections in their own social and humanitarian
projects.
• Increase of actions between Fellows and their respective
Districts. In turn, this can be translated to activities exchanged
among the Districts of a given Section.
These past years the I.C.D. Executive
Committee has been working on subjects of vital importance to
develop functions and achieve the College’s objectives.
This has been done, primarily, to secure institutional growth
and development. The following stand out and should be emphasized:
1. Communications:
They are fundamental and have first priority in the successful
development of the I.C.D. We are living in the electronic era
and all sorts of electronic devices facilitate communications.
We must take advantage of these unique opportunities to practice
the primary concept that originated the ICD; namely, the fluid
exchange of information among the members of the College. Our
Communications and Information and Technology Committees as well
as the Editor are developing a kind of ICD Information System
that entails practical and more efficient means for spreading
relevant and useful information.
2. Expansion of the I.C.D.: This applies not
only to membership. Fundamentally, it refers to an ICD presence
in geographical areas where we do not operate. Section IV South
America is working very well in this regard.
3. Committees’ Work: I.C.D. productivity
and efficiency would greatly improve if the work of the Standing
and Ad-Hoc Committees, could develop more dynamism in their endeavors.
Furthermore, this work modality would allow a greater number of
Fellows to actively participate in College actions by offering
ideas and suggestions to their respective Sections. In turn, the
corresponding Councilmen would bring this novel material to the
International Council.
4. Projects: We do understand and appreciate
the fact that all Sections are different. Also, we know that all
the Sections do not enjoy the same material standards and economic
opportunities. However, without any exception and regardless financial
conditions, all Sections must develop and support humanitarian
and social projects. At times, good and practical ideas might
be more useful than material aid! As Fellows of the International
College of Dentists our principal mission is to serve. There are
many ways to do this, even in the midst of limited economic means.
The International College of Dentists is a model of an institution
that has a long history and bears a significant tradition. Since
1920, when our College was conceived, it has maintained a very
special and characteristic profile. Our I.C.D. is clearly identified
by this particular and exclusive trait. The College’s profile
cannot be changed! Rather, it should be reinforced and, at the
same time, strengthened to project and expand it among the new
generations. Let us not forget that the new generations are living
in an era full of surprises and major changes.
Nonetheless, we must prepare a programme
for the future. Our past is specially enriching when we are knowledgeable
about the institution to which we belong. We are intensely living
the present, enjoying the ICD’s large and significant achievements
throughout the world. But, more important yet is to design and
truly know the road we wish to travel. This is especially true
for those of us who still actively participating in manifold activities.
It also applies to the new leaders of the profession who will
have to make decisions and take on responsibilities within the
frame of an optimistic and enthusiastic perspective.
To end, I would like to address very
briefly each one of the Fellows who were incorporated into our
International College of Dentists. Your professional and personal
merits, as well as your high Ethical standards, have qualified
you for membership in this unique and pre-eminent international
honorary dental organization. Welcome to your new home! The International
College of Dentists enjoys prestige and is well known for the
services it performs. Now you have the unique opportunity to serve
your College, your profession as well as humankind.
Dear colleagues, thank you again
for your wonderful hospitality! I congratulate you for this successful
meeting and I wish you all a successful year in all your endeavors.
This particular happy occasion is my wife’s and my biggest
reward for the efforts involved in undertaking such a long journey.
Thank you!
RAMON CASTILLO, D.D.S., M.S.
I.C.D. - International President
