Dr. Hani Farr Conducts Dental Mission

to the Dominican Republic

A six person team led by Austrian dentist Dr. Hani Farr undertook a charity mission in the Dominican Republic from 29th June to 14th July to support the work of NPH (Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos - Spanish for “Our Little Siblings”). NPH is an organization which has been caring for orphaned and abandoned children in Latin America and the Caribbean since 1954

Dr. Farr’s team included five dental students from the University of Zurich in Switzerland. They fulfilled their duties in a professional manner. This humanitarian mission was undertaken with donations from Europe (Austria and Switzerland).

The NPH campus in San Pedro consists of 12 houses which accommodates 160 children, who have been orphaned, and abandoned due to parental poverty and other socio economic reasons, and the staff of 60 who deal with their welfare including administrative, educational and medical needs. The average monthly income in San Pedro is between 60 and 120 Euros.

Initially Dr. Farr and his team introduced themselves to the children and the staff and informed them of their aims and objectives. This interaction allowed them to win the trust of the children and to function as friends and not merely medical practitioners.

Their aims included educating the children and staff about the human body especially dental and oral hygiene. Dr. Farr and his team also created a dental registry on the status of every child in order to maintain and update their dental histories. The children and staff were provided with high quality tooth brushes and tooth paste and they were trained and motivated to use them in the correct manner.

The team undertook fillings and other treatments despite frequent power cuts and lack of running water. Water had to be carried in cans, which was a challenge in hot, humid and unsanitary conditions where temperature can reach up to 40C.   Other challenges included poor infrastructure and low quality hygiene, particularly since some of the children were HIV positive or suffering from hepatitis from birth.

The dental equipment was of a very basic standard and the portable equipment was very slow due to their age. However, in spite of these limitations, the children were provided with the best care and treatment possible. For surgical purposes and extraction, the anaesthetic, needles and syringe were transported from Europe.

The treatment took place on a daily basis both in the mornings and afternoons. Once the treatments to the children were completed, dental examinations of the staff were also conducted, profiting from the experience and qualifications of Dr. Farr.

The International Medical Relief Dental Health Program IMRA has launched a new program that will focus on providing dental health, supplies, funding, and services to enhance proper oral hygiene for underprivileged countries. If you would like to contribute or join this branch, please contact us for further details. Your donations are welcome and vital towards the success of our community projects!  http://www.imraweb.com/dental.php
