Autumn Meeting of Irish District

The Irish District held its Christmas Meeting and Dinner in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire on 22 November 2008 and had an excellent attendance of 42 people.

In his speech the Irish Regent, Dr. Tom Feeney, thanked everybody present for the great support.  He reminded them of the very successful meeting in Athens and many tributes were paid to Dr. Aris Petros Tripodakis and his team for the excellent annual meeting in June both in terms of scientific content and in terms of the huge effort that was made on the social side.  It truly was a memorable event.  Dr. Feeney also welcomed new Fellow Dr. Jerome Mullane and his wife Marina to their first meeting.  Advance notice and details were given of the Lisbon meeting and a strong attendance is expected.

The Irish District will have 3 inductees next year - John Tiernan a Dublin graduate from 1980; Martin Holohan, a Cork graduate from 1974; and Claudette Christie (whose husband Richard Graham is already a Fellow) a Belfast graduate from 1987.  The membership currently stands at 46, inclusive of two Masters, two Life Members and one Honorary Member.

Dr. Frank Shields completed his term as Vice Regent after a very successful spell both as Regent and Vice Regent.  The installation of Dr. Richard Graham as Vice Regent was warmly welcomed by all present.

Dr. Cecil Linehan was unfortunately unable to make the meeting because of a book production project.  Cecil has been deeply involved in the area of integrated education in Northern Ireland for many years now and is currently writing a book on the subject with colleagues.  It chronicles the history of the developments of the schools - now 62 - and the battles with church and state.  They finished writing last week and are suddenly projected into meeting publishers, book designers etc. with very strong advice from the professionals to get this done before Christmas.  Themembers were very appreciative of the great work that Cecil has done in this area over the years.

Dr. Feeney also thanked Dr. Joe Lemasney for the great work he has done in the International Arena, most recently in San Antonio.
