Dr. Patrick A. Adriaens: Preservation of alveolar bone volume: changing approach to tooth extraction
A technique based on the principles of guided tissue regeneration is described. Following atraumatic extraction, a resorbable barrier membrane is adapted and stabilized between the alveolar bone and the mucosa surrounding the extraction site. Clinical and histological observations demonstrate maintenance of crestal bone volume and woven bone formation. This approach facilitates subsequent implant placement or prosthetic rehabilitation.

Dr. Franck Renouard: Condition of success in implant dentistry : breaking the dogma”
A literature review and a 2- to 5-year retrospective study on 247 short implants shows that the success rate of short implants could be compared to longer one s. It seems that the only way to improve the implant load bearing capacity is to increase its diameter, not its length. The lecture shows that short implants could be in practice with a high success rate.

Dr. Patrick Simonet: Passivity of fit : A biological and Mechanical Paradox
A passive fit was considered almost essential for the long term success of osseointegration but recent studies have produced data indicating that prosthesis misfit may be less significant than once thought. We are faced with the following paradox : new computerized technology improves tremendously the mechanical and technical end result, but it be totally irrelevant from a biological point of view.

Dr. Jean-Louis Giovannoli: Evidence based therapy of inflammatory peri implant diseases
Clinical experience demonstrates that marginal peri-implant inflammation due to infection can induce severe bone loss and lead to secondary implant failure although the incidence of inflammatory peri-implant diseases on implant failures is very low. This presentation will assess the level of evidence and discuss the predictability of currently recommended therapy.

Dr. Jean-Daniel Aye: Recent advances in the Physiology and Pharmacology of pain
The large number of pain relieving drugs can cause perplexity about the reliability of these products. A new approach is required in view of the recent advances in physiology and pharmacology of pain. The physiology of local anesthetic, biological rhythms, chrono-pharmacology and the rational for the use of non steroid anti-inflammatory drug will be presented as well as the prevention of post operative pain.
